All the Layers of Laser Skin Treatments
Laser skin resurfacing is great option for patients looking for more noticeable results than a chemical peel but aren’t ready to move forward with a surgical procedure. Fine lines through deeper wrinkles; acne scars; uneven skin tone and texture can all be treated with laser skin resurfacing.
For the patient looking to freshen up their skin and be back to work on Monday, I would use the erbium laser to perform a MicroLaserPeel. The MicroLaserPeel can be a partial-to-full epidermal peel. (The epidermis being the outer most layer of the skin). A partial peel will hit just below the surface of the epidermis; this can help eliminate fine lines, reduce freckles, and give your skin a fresh glow. Because a MicroLaserPeel ablates the outer most layer of the skin, you will see a more noticeable result than you would with microdermabrasion or a chemical peel.
For patients looking to treat deeper irregularities, such as visible wrinkles and advanced sun damage, I would suggest either a deeper Erbium peel or the CO2 laser. A deeper erbium peel will vaporize the outer layers of the skin but tends to be cooler than the CO2, causing less thermal damage. This tends to result in less redness, swelling and bruising after the treatment. Patients can expect about a week of downtime after an erbium treatment. The CO2 laser is for my patients looking for even deeper rejuvination. The CO2 laser works like the erbium to remove thin layers of the epidermis as well as the dermis. It differs from the Erbium because it creates more thermal damage leading to increased collagen formation after healing. This gives a greater improvement to deep lines and loose skin. As you can imagine, working deeper into the skin will require more healing time, about 2 weeks, but keep in mind you are getting these results without a surgery.
During a consultation I can discuss exactly what your skin requires and develop a customized laser skin resurfacing treatment for you. We will take a good look at your skin; noticing any divots in the surface from acne scarring and taking note of freckles and sun spots. Are there fine lines around your eyes or are you seeing deeper wrinkles around your mouth and in your forehead? And most importantly, how much time can you dedicate to healing? Remember, the deeper the laser skin treatment, the more downtime required. A one on one evaluation will lead us to the right laser for you.
