Breast Implant Removal Options and What to Expect

For a variety of reasons, some patients who have received breast augmentation surgery later decide to have their implants removed. An implant removal procedure will be different for each patient, and there are several removal options available. Here’s a look at some of those options and what you can expect during a breast implant removal.

Breast Implant Removal Options

Patients who have had a breast augmentation and would like to have their implants removed have a few options to consider. The implants can simply be removed without any additional procedures, or they can be removed with an accompanying breast lift (if sagging breast tissue post implants is a concern). Breast implant revision is also an option, in which case the implants are adjusted, resized, or replaced to better suit the patient’s preferences. Patients can get help visualizing the proposed changes through 3D imaging, which allows for more accurate decisions regarding size and position.

Breast Implant Removal Recovery

As with all plastic surgery procedures, implant removals and revisions require a period of recovery following surgery. Recovery is typically a few days of rest before returning to work, and up to six weeks before returning to more strenuous activities such as exercise. Depending on the condition of the patient’s breasts and her preferences, the surgeon may also need to remove scar tissue or perform a breast lift as part of the removal or revision procedure. Additionally, just as having larger breasts took some getting used to just after augmentation surgery, patients may need time to adjust to having their breasts back at or near their original size and shape.
