Rhinoplasty

The shape and size of your nose can affect the symmetry and aesthetics of your whole face. A rhinoplasty, often referred to as a nose job, can help to balance the size, shape, and symmetry of the nose. Dr. William Franckle is a board-certified surgeon with years of experience helping patients achieve subtle, natural-looking results. Learn more about if you are an ideal candidate for this procedure, as well as surgery options and recovery information.

Is Rhinoplasty Right for You?

Do you feel like your nose is disproportionate to the rest of your face? Do you have difficulty breathing due to sinus problems or a previous nose injury? Or, does your nose have an unwanted bump or asymmetrical shape? There are many reasons why patients pursue a rhinoplasty surgery, and the best way to determine if this procedure is right for you is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Franckle.

Rhinoplasty can help patients achieve aesthetic goals, but it may also help those who suffer from nasal breathing problems such as sleep apnea. Nose surgery may also be right for candidates who have suffered a nasal fracture and require reconstructive surgery to repair the shape and functionality of the nasal passage.

In addition, if you are bothered by any of the following issues, then a nose job surgery may be right for you:

  • A hooked or crooked nose that impacts facial symmetry
  • A nose shape with a rounded, bulbous tip or disproportionately large nostrils
  • An enlarged bump on the bridge of the nose, also known as a dorsal hump

Ideal candidates for rhinoplasty should be in good physical and mental health and have realistic expectations about the results of the surgery. This procedure should not be performed until the patient’s nose has fully developed, usually around age 15 or older.

What Types of Rhinoplasty Surgeries Exist?

All of these factors, in combination with your desired surgical outcomes, will help Dr. Franckle determine the best type of rhinoplasty procedure for you. All options are outpatient procedures that can be done under general anesthesia.

Open Rhinoplasty: Incisions are made externally across the strip of skin between the nostrils known as the columella and internally to help reshape the nasal bones, cartilage, and soft tissues.

Closed Rhinoplasty: Only internal incisions are made to help reshape the nasal bones, cartilage, and soft tissues.

Tip-plasty: Either the open or closed procedure can be used to reshape the tip of the nose.

Nostril Reduction: Either the open or closed procedure can be used by making tiny incisions at the outer base of the nostrils to reduce their size.

What Happens During a Rhinoplasty Consultation?

The first step in determining the appropriate surgery is to meet with Dr. Franckle for a consultation to review your medical history. During the medical review, it is important that you share any history of breathing issues or allergies, which could impact the nasal passage and results of the surgery.

Dr. Franckle will also use Vectra 3D Imaging during the consultation, which allows patients to view a preview of the results before they commit to rhinoplasty. Vectra technology uses 3D cameras to capture images of the patient from many different angles. These images will then be used to create three-dimensional before and after images.

This offers you a time to communicate your expectations and specific concerns with Dr. Franckle in order to make sure you are both in agreement on the desired outcomes. Once Dr. Franckle understands your unique aesthetic goals, he can decide the best type of surgical procedure to meet those goals.

What to Expect From a Rhinoplasty Procedure

To begin the rhinoplasty procedure, Dr. Franckle will make the internal and external incisions, depending on if it is an open or closed rhinoplasty. The placement of the incisions will also depend on your unique surgical goals, which will be determined during your consultation. Once the incisions are made, Dr. Franckle can lift the soft tissues and gain access to the cartilage and nasal bones that create the shape of the nose. From there, the small cartilages in the top and bridge of the nose can be reshaped, and small cuts in the middle nose bones may also be necessary.

For those with difficulty breathing, the nasal airway can be opened, and the deviated septum can be straightened. Additional incisions are sometimes made at the outer base of each nostril if there is a desire to alter the nostril size or symmetry. In some cases, a cartilage graft from the ear or septum can also be used to restore the side walls of the nostrils. To complete the procedure, Dr. Franckle will finalize the placement of the underlying tissues and nasal skin and close the incisions. Since this is an outpatient procedure, you will be able to return home the same day of the surgery.

Cost

The cost of a rhinoplasty varies based on the patient and how extensive the procedure is. On average a rhinoplasty costs $7,000-$10,000. This could be more or less and we suggest visiting the office for a consultation with Dr. Franckle for an exact quote.

How to Prepare

To prepare for a rhinoplasty procedure. it is important to recognize that you will time to rest and allow your body to heal following the surgery. The procedure is outpatient so you will be released from the surgery center within the same day. You will need someone to pick you up and take you home. We suggest to have someone by your side or checking in on you frequently for the first 1-2 days to assist with daily activities.

What Is the Recovery Process Like for a Rhinoplasty Procedure?

Following the completion of the surgery, you will be sent home with soft rubber splints placed over the nasal septum and a dorsal bridge splint covering the bridge of the nose. Swelling and bruising are normal, but resting with your head elevated may help reduce swelling. If internal septal splints were also used, they will be removed by Dr. Franckle during your follow-up appointment in the 3 to 4 days following the procedure. The dorsal bridge splint can be removed after 7 to 10 days, depending on the progress of your healing. You may return to work about 7 days after surgery, depending on your recovery progress. Avoid strenuous activities for at least two weeks. The final result of the reshaping procedure can take up to 12 months to be fully evident, but most patients see their swelling reduced after 2-4 months.

FAQ's

As with any surgical procedure, there are some risks associated with a rhinoplasty. Most patients emerge from the operation without problems or complications. However, the most typical risks involve bleeding and infection. Some people also experience an adverse reaction to the anesthesia, nerve damage, or scarring.

Everyone has different degrees of sensitivity regarding bruising. Most patients have some bruising under their eyes, usually lasting about ten days. You should be able to see the bruising lessen as each day passes.  As with most surgeries, scarring is an after-effect and the degree of scarring varies based on the patient. A closed procedure involves incisions inside the nostrils where no one will see a scar. Some surgeries involve an incision between the nostrils with the potential for a scar. You will be given a exact description of where your incisions will be placed during your consultation and/or pre-operative appointment. If you are concerned about the level of bruising or scarring you will experience, be sure to discuss this with Dr. Franckle at an appointment prior to surgery.

The first seven days after surgery are the most difficult with pain, swelling, and bruising. Most people working in a sedentary profession find that taking one week of leave is sufficient. However, anyone wishing to keep the surgery a secret or working in a profession that requires physical activity should take between two and three weeks off. Dr. Franckle can provide specific recommendations for you during your pre-operative appointment.

Gynecomastia is the medical term for enlarged breasts in men. Approximately 15 million males in the United States experience gynecomastia at any given time. It can be found in either one breast or both, and it can sometimes cause a noticeable imbalance in the size of the breasts. Though it is often a painless condition, men who suffer from it may experience feelings of embarrassment or shyness.

As with any invasive procedure, it is absolutely paramount that the patient be otherwise healthy before undergoing surgery. ❗️FALSE❗️

Fact: A facelift can reposition tissue and address the neck area in ways fillers cannot. However, fillers are excellent for adding lost facial volume and giving a boost to your skin. They’re a great short-term, nonsurgical way to fight the signs of aging. If you’re unsure about committing to a facelift, give facial fillers a try.
