Breast Augmentation 101: Breast Implant Recovery

Posted on November 17th, 2014 by Dr. William Franckle

If you’ve read all four parts of this blog series, by now you know all about breast implant types, sizes, and placement. But when you’re ready to finally have the surgery, perhaps the most important question is, “What will breast implant recovery be like?”

Immediately after the surgery, you will be taken to the recovery area where you’ll be monitored for a few hours. Unless complications arise, you will be able to leave the hospital the same day as your surgery. Your breasts will be wrapped in gauze or elastic bandages to aid in breast implant recovery. You will be given a special support bra, which will also aid in your healing.

You are given specific instructions on how to care for your breasts after surgery, including how to clean the incision wounds to prevent infection. Medication may also be give to help with pain or to minimize the risk of infection.

You will need to wear your support bra around the clock as you heal. We encourage our patients to rest for two weeks after the surgery, but you will definitely need to take at least one to two days off with minimal activity. After that, you’ll be able to resume some activities as allowed by Dr. Franckle, but expect to be sore for a few weeks. Depending on how the healing process goes, Dr. Franckle will clear you to resume normal activities within 4-6 weeks.

Within 2 months, you should expect to have completed your breast implant recovery. This means you should be able to resume all normal activities, feel more like yourself again, and feel comfortable with your new body. We will schedule periodic follow-up appointments within the first year after your surgery to assess the condition of your new breasts. In the meantime, enjoy showing off that new body!
