5 Non-Surgical Aesthetic Treatments for Facial Rejuvenation
Posted on January 24th, 2024 by Dr. William FranckleIf you’ve ever wanted to take steps toward a brighter, more youthful-looking appearance without undergoing a full plastic surgery procedure, there are plenty of options available. Thanks to a range of non-surgical aesthetic treatments, reducing the signs of aging and rejuvenating your face can be achieved without invasive procedures and lengthy, uncomfortable recovery periods.
Facial injectables, chemical peels, photofacials, dermaplaning procedures, and micro-infusions target the many factors that influence your face’s appearance, from wrinkles and fine lines to dead skin cells, sun damage, volume loss, and irregular pigmentation. Here’s a closer look at these non-surgical treatments and how they work to revitalize your face.
Injectables
Although they work in different ways to combat the wrinkles, fine lines, and volume loss associated with aging facial skin, BOTOX® Cosmetic and Juvéderm injections are quick, virtually painless, and can be performed during a simple in-office appointment, making them very popular non-surgical treatment options. Depending on your aesthetic goals, these two injectables may be used separately or together, as well as with other non-surgical procedures.
BOTOX® Cosmetic
FDA-approved for more than 20 years, BOTOX® Cosmetic injections use botulinum toxin type A to reduce the movement of facial muscles that, over time, lead to increased wrinkles, folds, and fine lines. These injections can target a number of areas around the face depending on a patient’s needs, including wrinkles in the forehead and between the eyebrows, crow’s feet around the eyes, and fine lines around the mouth.
BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments can be performed in the doctor’s office in as little as 10 minutes, and visible results typically last for up to four months after initial injection. Patients can take additional steps and precautions between treatments to extend the lifespan of BOTOX® Cosmetic injectable results, including limiting sun exposure, avoiding smoking, and managing diet and stress.
Juvéderm
As you age, your body begins to produce less hyaluronic acid—a natural compound that moisturizes your skin and helps it retain water—which over time leads to sagging skin, wrinkles, and reduced facial volume. Juvéderm injections reintroduce hyaluronic acid to your facial skin and work to lift, smooth, and plump up areas that have taken on a flat or hollow appearance.
FDA-approved and ranked as the top injectable filler in the world, Juvéderm injections often target volume loss in the lips, cheeks, and nasolabial folds, which are the arc-shaped lines that connect your nose to the corners of your mouth. Juvéderm is administered during a short in-office appointment, and visible results can last up to two years after their initial injection.
Chemical Peels
Patients with signs of aging, uneven skin tone on the face, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, or sun damage may be good candidates for a chemical peel. This process uses a chemical solution to safely remove dead skin cells and exfoliate facial skin, resulting in a fresher, healthier, and more youthful appearance.
Chemical peels may sound intimidating, but the procedure and recovery are actually quite simple and painless. The chemical application process can cause a mild tingling or stinging sensation that only lasts a few seconds. Some redness and flakiness should be expected for a few days following the procedure, and it’s important that patients avoid picking and scratching to ensure proper healing. Using generous amounts of moisturizer and wearing sunscreen often to protect against UV damage are also beneficial following a chemical peel.
Photofacials
Also known as intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, photofacials are a non-invasive treatment that help to minimize the aesthetic effects of pigment-related blemishes, sun damage, rosacea, and other conditions affecting the tone and coloration of facial skin. During a photofacial, specialized technicians use advanced tools to treat target areas with intense, focused pulses of light.
Photofacials are among the most comfortable non-surgical facial treatments, as patients may only feel a slight warming sensation during the procedure. A photofacial is usually completed in just a few minutes, and patients enjoy essentially zero downtime or recovery afterward. As with chemical peels, post-treatment care for photofacials involves keeping the affected skin moisturized and protected from UV exposure.
Dermaplaning
Dermaplaning is a fast, painless, and effective way to achieve smooth, brighter-looking facial skin, and the results may last for several weeks after the procedure. During this treatment, a specialist uses a razor-like tool to gently remove the outer layer of dead skin cells as well as fine facial hair (otherwise known as peach fuzz), leaving behind smoother and brighter-looking skin.
In addition to providing instantly exfoliated and revitalized skin, dermaplaning also creates a cleaner, more cooperative surface for the application of makeup or medical-grade skincare products, making it a good starting point before beginning a new skincare regimen.
Micro-Infusions
Micro-infusions are virtually painless, show results quickly, and require almost no downtime or recovery, making them an increasingly popular non-surgical facial treatment. During a micro-infusion, a specialist uses microscopic needles to inject a customizable enhancing or healing serum directly into the dermis, the second layer of skin. The tiny needles leave small injuries on the surface of the skin, which in turn stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, proteins that are essential for healthy and lively-looking skin.
Micro-infusion treatment sessions typically take an hour or less to complete, and results may last up to four months after treatment. The procedure is suitable for most patients seeking to improve the appearance and texture of their facial skin.
