Is Now the Time for Eyelid Surgery?

Posted on April 20th, 2016 by Dr. William Franckle

Widely considered the most attractive physical feature, our eyes reveal a lot about us. However, sometimes what they say isn’t what we want to convey. As we get older, our eyes can make us look worn out and tired because the already thin skin in that area grows even thinner and begins to droop. For some patients, that excess eyelid skin can even cause vision problems. Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, can address both visual and aesthetic issues in one procedure.

Are You a Good Candidate?

Just about anyone over a certain age can benefit from a blepharoplasty. Whether performed on the upper lids, lower lids, or both, the procedure can completely rejuvenate the affected area. It’s no wonder that eye lifts consistently rank as one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the nation. With that said, not everyone is a good fit for eyelid surgery. Here are a handful of characteristics that make someone a good candidate for eyelid rejuvenation:

– Extreme sagging around the upper eyelids

– Bloated or puffy bags of fat in the upper or lower lids

– Severe wrinkling around the eyelids

– No natural crease in the upper lids

– Excess eyelid skin that obstructs vision

General Health and Wellness

As an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon, the health of our patients always takes precedence in Dr. Frankle’s mind. A full workup of a patient’s general health and health background is always required before moving forward with a plastic surgery procedure at our office. More specifically, patients must be non-smokers (quitting before the procedure is an option) who do not have any serious illnesses or conditions that might impair recovery.

What to Expect

It is important to remember that plastic surgery is, in fact, a surgery. Anesthesia and incisions are involved in most procedures that require the removal of fat or excess skin. However, because incision sites are carefully chosen and can be concealed along natural skin folds and creases, recovery from this procedure normally only takes a few weeks. Most patients observe the best results in just four to six weeks, which is much faster than most other cosmetic procedures.

Eyelid surgery can turn back the clock on premature aging in the eye area. Learn more about this procedure, how to prepare and all about recovery here.
