Three Factors That Make Dark Circles Worse

Posted on February 02nd, 2020 by Dr. William Franckle

Dark circles under the eyes are a common occurrence in both men and women. And while they may be genetic to a certain degree, and some factors are hard or impossible to prevent such as fatigue or age, there are some bad habits and routines that can worsen their appearance and make them harder to get rid of. That’s why it’s helpful to understand how to prevent them in the first place.

Washing With Hot Water

Using hot water to wash the face makes anyone relaxed, especially on a cold morning. However, when it comes to dark circles, this routine can worsen the bluish under-eye tint. Instead of outright eliminating hot water, consider the application of a washcloth doused in cold water or ice cubes on the spots just under the eyes to make the dilated blood vessels shrink, helping to reduce the swelling.

Not Drinking Enough Water

Everyone knows they should be drinking plenty of water every day. Not only does it help keep our major organs working and our blood flowing, but it also helps keep the skin smooth and healthy. Dehydrated skin may have a tendency to be more fragile due to the thinning of the tissues. One way to keep track of hydration levels throughout the day is to use a reusable water container and setting a goal to refill that container until drinking approximately 64 ounces.

Using Wipes To Remove Makeup

There’s nothing better than removing makeup after a long, busy day. However, when doing so, it’s important not to wipe or rub the face too forcefully. Excess rubbing of makeup from around the eyes can result in inflammation, making matters worse for those who have dark circles under the eyes. Additionally, everyone’s skin is different, and some over the counter makeup wipes may be too harsh for the face. Cleansing oils can be a nice, gentle alternative to traditional makeup removers.

Even though facial dark circles can be fairly common, that doesn’t mean you don’t have options. Dermal fillers like Juvederm may help to reduce swelling and hollowing underneath the eyes. At William Franckle, MD, FACS, we implement the most up to date dermal fillers for those looking to achieve their cosmetic goals.
