Guide to Common Breast Shapes

Posted on March 20th, 2022 by Dr. William Franckle

Breast shape is unique to each person’s body, and no two breasts are the same. Breast shape and size can change over time as you age and experience health and lifestyle changes.

What Determines a Person’s Breast Shape?

A person’s breast shape is tied to their unique anatomy, and though there are common breast shapes many people may be familiar with, some breasts have certain characteristics that prevent rigid categorization. Even if your breasts have maintained the same shape for most of your life, the following factors can impact your breast profile at any point in your life:

– Weight loss or gain
– Pregnancy
– Genetics
– Aging
– Menstruation
– Exercise

You can schedule breast augmentation or reconstruction surgery at any point in your life if a plastic surgeon deems you an eligible candidate for the procedure. Your breast shape can’t be “abnormal,” but if you’re interested in making aesthetic changes, a board-certified plastic surgeon is the best resource for helping you understand realistic surgical outcomes. Common breast shapes include:

– Round
– Bell
– Conical (Cone)
– Teardrop
– Close-set
– Wide-set
– East-West
– Asymmetrical

Understanding Breast Asymmetry

It’s fairly common for a pair of breasts to be different sizes, up to a full cup size—and they can also differ in shape. Uneven breast shape or size is usually not a cause for concern, but noticing a significant difference in shape or size could indicate that you should see a doctor.

Can You Address Nipple Issues?

You can work with a cosmetic surgeon to address inverted nipples if you’re interested in more than just changing the overall appearance of your breasts. This procedure is a corrective surgery that takes about 30 minutes, and patients can go home directly after the procedure.
