Breast Augmentation 101: Breast Implant Size
Posted on November 05th, 2014 by Dr. William FranckleChoosing the right breast implant size is extremely important when you’re considering a breast augmentation. Here are some things to consider when it comes to size.
How It Works
Implants are measured in volume by cubic centimeters (CCs), as well as base diameter (how wide it is) and profile (how full it looks). A very common mistake is judging a desired breast implant size based on a bra size. The size and measurements of an implant do not necessarily correlate to traditional bra sizes. And bra sizes can vary drastically between one bra manufacturer and the next. Women come in all different heights and frame sizes; that affects the relative difference in volume between when comparing implants sizes. So it will take more than just picking an implant of the shelf to achieve your desired result.
Current Size
Not every woman can have large implants. There must be enough existing breast tissue to cover the implant; otherwise the edges may be visible through your skin. The larger the implant volume, the wider the diameter of the implant. Choosing an implant too large for your body increases the risk of surgical complications and premature sagging.
Lifestyle
Large implants may be impractical for very active people, making it difficult to exercise or participate in sports comfortably. Dr. Franckle will ask questions about your lifestyle to help determine the appropriate breast implant size for you.
Goals
Many women do not want larger breasts. The may simply want more symmetrical breasts. Your goals for the surgery will help Dr. Franckle understand what size implants you need.
Trying It On
At our office we use Vectra 3D imaging to help you picture your post-operative result. Using several specialized 3D cameras, multiple pictures of you are taken simultaneously from numerous angles. These pictures are then used to build (2) three-dimensional images of you. The first image is used as your “before” model and the second as your “after” model.
Our goal is to make sure you’re happy and comfortable with your body. To do that, we spend time getting to know more about you, your goals, and your lifestyle to find that perfect breast implant size!
