Chin Augmentation Checks and Balances

Posted on January 20th, 2016 by Dr. William Franckle

Chin augmentation can be a great way to improve the overall shape and balance of the face, especially from the profile view. Many times our patients interested in a chin augmentation are looking to strengthen a “weak chin.” Our male patients are concerned that a “weak chin” makes them look less masculine. Our female patients tell us that their lack of a defined chin leads to a more aged or “droopy” appearance. And even more often, patients visit our office looking to combine a rhinoplasty (nose job) procedure with a chin augmentation to achieve overall facial proportion.

What is a Chin Augmentation?

A chin augmentation, or mentoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure to reshape the chin and provide a harmonious balance to your facial features. During a chin augmentation, the area may be enhanced with an implant or lessened with a reduction surgery on the bone depending on the desired outcome.

Chin Implant Sizes

Believe it or not, during your consultation, the size of your chin implant will be discussed. The sizes range from very small to extra large. The difference between each option is about 1/25 of an inch. That may seem insignificant, but these size differences alter the appearance considerably. Don’t worry, Dr. Franckle will walk you through exactly how the sizing works and what sizes will work best for your desired result.

General Health Requirements for a Chin Augmentation

Health requirements for a chin augmentation procedure are unique because we need to consider the patient’s dental health. Any teeth or gum issues could have a negative impact on the healing process. If a chin implant is being used, it is also important to confirm that there are no allergies to the implant material. As with most cosmetic surgeries, an ideal chin augmentation candidate should not have serious health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or depression. Smoking during the healing process can be harmful after any procedure, but it is even more important that you stop smoking prior to a chin augmentation and refrain until after you are completely healed.
