Three Key Ways to Reduce Plastic Surgery Scarring
Posted on December 11th, 2018 by Dr. William FrancklePatients typically undergo plastic surgery procedures to enhance their outward appearance, either improve certain parts of their bodies or to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and other visible signs of aging. Surgical procedures can be very effective, but a downside to any surgery is the scars left over after the wounds heal. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce plastic surgery scarring after a procedure.
Follow Recovery Instructions
The best way to reduce scarring is to properly care for the wound by closely following all recovery instructions. This includes changing the bandage exactly as instructed, keeping the wound clean to reduce the chance of infection. Physical activities that pull at the skin should be avoided until the patient is cleared for exercise. While there’s no way to completely eliminate scars without opting for a non-surgical procedure instead, following the physician’s post-surgery instructions will help minimize the impact of plastic surgery.
Use Anti-scarring Cream
The surgeon may prescribe a cream that reduces the risk of infection to the wound, so patients should use this during the initial healing phase. Once the wound has closed or the surgeon gives the okay, over-the-counter scar creams can be used on the area. Other effective natural options that may help with scarring include Vitamin E supplements, coconut oil, and aloe vera. Patients should always check with their physician before using anything on the area.
Try Silicon Tape
Silicon tape can go a long way in minimizing scars from tummy tuck procedures, breast augmentations, and other surgeries on the stomach and breasts. The silicon imitates the natural barrier of the skin by creating an atmosphere of moisture, which hydrates the scar and prevents a buildup of the type of collagen that causes scarring. Silicon tape needs to be worn regularly for several months to be an effective treatment.
Any surgical procedure that involves an incision in the skin will lead to scarring, and although scars do fade, they don’t disappear completely. The severity of the scar will depend upon the procedure that was performed and the patient’s skin repair response, so patients may have varying degrees of success with any of these scar reduction methods. Every patient should speak with their surgeon before using any of these treatments.
