Why Liposuction is On the Rise in the U.S.
Posted on January 22nd, 2015 by Dr. William FranckleAfter gathering last year’s plastic and cosmetic surgery data, The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) has announced that liposuction was the most popular surgical procedure of 2013. Some 363,912 patients underwent the procedure, demonstrating an increase of more than 16 percent from 2012. ASAPS also announced that Americans spent more on both surgical and nonsurgical aesthetic-driven procedures in 2013 than they had since the recession started in 2008. They invested more than $1 billion in liposuction alone.
So why is there such an attraction to this fat removal technique? There are a number of reasons that are attracting more and more people to the outpatient procedure each year. Here are a few key facts to know about liposuction:
It can be used to target various areas of the body.
Small pockets of fat that are not responding to exercise and diet can be removed. Women commonly opt to address stubborn fat on the lower belly, thighs, waist, or underarms. Men often target areas like the chest or abdomen to gain a more desirable contour.
Results can be long lasting.
During a liposuction procedure fat cells are permanently removed from the body. If you maintain a healthy lifestyle and stable weight after the procedure, the results can be long lasting.
Recovery is not as intense as other more invasive procedures
Most patients can go home within a few hours after their liposuction is completed. They wear a compression garment to combat inflammation and provide additional support. Oral pain relievers can address discomfort and are usually necessary only for a few days.
The results appear over time.
Many people especially appreciate the fact that results don’t appear overnight; as this might make it obvious to others that they’ve had some type of procedure done. Instead, the results are fully revealed over a period of two to three months, making them appear more natural.
