Patient Post-Surgical FAQs

Q. Can I wash my garment after my plastic surgery procedure?

A. Yes. We encourage our patients to hand wash their garment or throw it on a light cycle in their wash. However, we advise all patients not to utilize a dryer, as this will shrink their garments.

Q. Do I have to wear my garment all day and evening?

A. Yes. Dr. Franckle advises his patients to wear their garments for the first 4-6 weeks (depending on the procedure). You may not wear your garment for a couple of hours for it to be washed and air-dried.

Q. Should I purchase any special equipment for aftercare?

A. No. It is not necessary to purchase a chair for your shower or a walking cane after your plastic surgery procedure. If anything, we encourage patients undergoing a body procedure to have menstruation pads that barricade around their drain incisions to catch additional fluids leaking from the incision.

Q. How long should I wait until I can go swimming after my procedure?

A. Patients undergoing a plastic surgery procedure in the summertime are not permitted to submerge their incisions in any body of water until they are completely closed up. This process can take 4-8 weeks, depending on the procedure and healing process.

Q. When should I shower after my procedure?

A. Dr. Franckle encourages his patients to shower the following day after their surgery. Patients may shower as usual with the body wash they would traditionally use. Before taking a shower, patients may remove their garments and clip their drains (if they have any) on a necklace or lanyard. Shower as usual and get steri-strips soapy. Once the shower is complete, pat the body and incisions dry and resume wearing the surgical garment.

Q. How soon can I remove my steri-strips and/or surgical tape?

A. We encourage our patients to wait at least 10 days to remove their steri-strips or surgical tape. However, we usually inform them to wait until their first post-op visit with Dr. Franckle at our plastic surgery clinic so he can remove them carefully.

Q. Should I apply Neosporin to my incisions?

A. No! Please keep incisions clean and dry. If you believe they are starting to get an infection, you should call the office and schedule a follow-up visit immediately. Sign of infection may include: incision site is warm to touch or a low-grade fever (anything over 103 degrees).

Q. When can I resume my workouts?

A. Typically, patients can resume normal activities six weeks after their procedure, whether it’s a breast lift, tummy tuck, or any other type of plastic surgery. However, if they feel strained, they should scale back and do a low-impact workout until they feel comfortable resuming their usual regimen.

Q. When can I sleep on my side or stomach?

A. Patients may resume sleeping on their sides and/or stomach after about eight weeks following their procedure or until Dr. Franckle clears them. Once drains are removed form body procedures, you may sleep on your side. However, breasty procedures may wait around 6 weeks.

Q. How soon can I drive after my plastic surgery procedure?

A. Patients are not permitted to drive under the influence of narcotics and prescription pain medications. In addition, patients should not drive until they have a full range of motion with their arms and are no longer on prescription pain medication. Any patient with drains may resume driving once the drains have been removed.

Q. How can I minimize the appearance of my scars?

At about 6-8 weeks post-op, Dr. Franckle will encourage all his patients to massage their incisions and utilize silicone scar strips and creams. In the warmer months, sunscreen will also do wonders! Our office will also be offering Morpheus8 treatments, to help minimize the appearance of plastic surgery scars.
