Liposuction Vs. CoolSculpting—What’s the Difference?

In recent years, non-invasive fat removal technology, like CoolSculpting, has grown in popularity as an alternative to traditional liposuction. However, Dr. Franckle’s extensive experience has shown him that traditional liposuction is still the best option. Read on to discover why. How Does Liposuction Work?

Liposuction is still the only procedure available that completely removes fat from the body. After making tiny incisions into the areas being treated, Dr. Frankle inserts an IV fluid to loosen the fat cells and prepare them for removal. Next, a small metal tube with suction capabilities—a cannula—is used to remove the fat cells from the body. The progress is measured visually, as well as by feel.

How Does CoolSculpting Work?

First, the treatment area is marked for the precise placement of an applicator device. As two cooling pads numb the area, the applicator head draws fat cells into a cup. Without harming the skin, muscles, or nerves, a controlled cooling process called cryolipolysis kills the fat cells in the cup. An hour later, the surgeon removes the cup and massages the dead fat cells for natural removal by the body.

Why Is Liposuction the Better Choice?

CoolSculpting appears to be an attractive choice because it offers the decreased risks and downtime associated with a non-invasive procedure. But, it is a newer technology, and the long-term results are less certain. Also, the areas of treatment can be limited by the size of the application head—fat being treated must be able to fit into the freezing cup. Typically, up to three treatments are necessary to achieve noticeable results, and patients have reported noticeable indentations where the application device was placed on the body.

Liposuction, on the other hand, offers a fast reduction of fat and better contouring of the body because the treatment area is not limited to the size of an application head. While liposuction does require some downtime for recovery and carries the possibility of surgical risks, the results are easier for the surgeon to control and visualize almost immediately. In recent years, Dr. Franckle has seen several patients interested in liposuction for cryolipolysis revision, correcting any indentations or undesirable contours caused by past CoolSculpting treatments.

For a good candidate, liposuction offers more proven results than the newer non-invasive alternatives. Liposuction and its techniques have improved over time, bringing us less invasive options like Body Jet and Laser-Assisted techniques.
