Four Facts About Rhinoplasty
A ‘nose job’. When you hear that term there may be some misconceptions that come to mind based on what you’ve read online or heard on TV. A rhinoplasty, or ‘nose reshaping’ surgical procedure alters the nose for cosmetic and/or functional purposes. You may think you know all about a ‘nose job’, but we bet you don’t know these four facts:
There Are Several Types of Rhinoplasty Procedures
Although many rhinoplasty procedures can achieve similar results, they often fall into four distinct categories. Open rhinoplasties are completed when incisions are made across the strip of skin between the nostrils to reshape nasal bones, cartilage, and tissues. In a closed rhinoplasty, only internal incisions are made for reshaping. In tip-plasty, the tip of the nosed is resurfaced and in nostril reduction, tiny incisions are made at the outer base of the nostrils to help reduce their size.
A Rhinoplasty Isn’t Just for Aesthetics
Although nose jobs can be used to help improve facial harmony and symmetry, they are equally valuable for helping to improve patients’ health. These surgeries may be beneficial for those suffering from nasal breathing problems such as sleep apnea. They are also popular as reconstructive surgery among candidates who have had a fractured nose in the past and need to repair its shape and functionality.
All Recoveries Are Different
While some may see results from their procedure after only a few weeks, others may experience swelling for up to 4 months. After the nose is fully healed, the final shape will be apparent. Similar to most facial surgeries, patients should avoid strenuous activity for three to six weeks after surgery.
Rhinoplasty Is Highly Customizable
There is a stereotype that nose jobs all result in a similar, uniform nose when, in reality, it’s entirely up to the patient to decide on the finished look. Whether patients are looking for a slimmer nose, a shorter nose, or a nose that allows them to breathe more easily, rhinoplasties are not one-size-fits-all. At your consultation with Dr William Franckle, all of your concerns and goals for the surgery will be discussed and a procedure plan specific to you will be developed.
