Am I a Good Candidate for Labiaplasty?
Posted on January 30th, 2018 by Dr. William FranckleLabiaplasty is a cosmetic surgery solution for women who are bothered by excess skin of the inner and/or outer labia. For some, this is merely an aesthetic concern; for others, enlarged labia may cause chafing, dryness, irritation, or problems during sexual activity. If these issues sound familiar, you may be a good candidate for labiaplasty.
Reasons to Have a Labiaplasty
While both appearance and comfort are valid reasons to seek a labiaplasty, it is important to understand that every woman is different; there are no “ideal labia” to strive for. That being said, if you are bothered by the prominence of your labia, this procedure may be right for you. Physical factors that may lead you to consider labiaplasty are:
– Uncomfortable rubbing when walking or sitting
– Difficulty inserting a tampon
– One side of the labia is noticeably larger than the other
– The labia minor (inner lips) are more prominent than the labia majora (outer lips)
– Pain or chafing during intercourse
Practical Considerations
A good candidate for a labiaplasty is experiencing one or more of the issues listed above and is in overall good health. The type of labiaplasty surgery varies depending on the desired results. With a trim labiaplasty, excess skin is removed and sutured directly. During a wedge procedure, a pie-shaped wedge of tissue is removed and natural borders are restored. A consultation with Dr. Franckle will determine how your labiaplasty procedure will look.
This procedure can take up to an hour and can be performed under local or general anesthesia in an outpatient setting. Full recovery can take several weeks with the noticeable swelling resolving in six weeks. Most patients take a week off from work and other daily activities to allow their body to heal and leave adequate time to ice the treated area.
Before undergoing labiaplasty, make sure you can take enough time off to heal properly.
